Have you ever found it difficult to stop thinking about someone? Whether it's because you admire them, a past love, an unrequited love, or an unhealthy attraction, what you're feeling could be classified as an obsession with someone. An unchecked obsession with someone can be harmful to both others and your own mental health.

Signs of obsession with others

It is normal to admire someone. You can admire a coworker, a celebrity, or anyone who piques your interest. But, in some cases, admiration can turn into an unhealthy obsession.

While healthy admiration requires mutual respect and trust, unhealthy obsession prevents you from letting go of your attachment to the person you admire.

Obsession with someone occurs when you are so preoccupied with thoughts about that person that you have no room for anything else in your mind. Signs that you are obsessed with another person can range from:

  • Always think about the person
  • Paying close attention to social media content and experiencing strong emotions such as joy, anxiety, longing, jealousy, and sadness towards the person
  • Ignoring one's own needs
  • Neglecting relationships with friends and family
  • Imagining the person you admire
  • Compulsive behaviors such as driving past the person's house, constantly texting or calling them, spending hours rereading old messages, or other out-of-control behaviors

In extreme cases, obsession can lead to excessive behaviors such as stalking or going to great lengths to be in the same location as the admired character, even if it causes him or her discomfort. This is not only harmful to you but also to the person you admire and those around them.

This doesn't mean to say that you should not think of or admire others; however, if these thoughts become so overwhelming that you lose control of your life, you may require assistance in controlling your thoughts and feelings.

How to stop obsessing over people

If you have an obsession with someone, you can try to relieve it in the following ways:

  • Acknowledge obsessive thoughts

Recognizing that you have obsessive thoughts is the first step toward overcoming them. Recognizing obsessive thoughts will help you find ways to manage and control them.

  • Distract yourself

After identifying the obsessive thoughts you are experiencing, the next step is to engage in other activities that will keep your mind busy and away from those thoughts.

Consider taking up a new hobby, such as regular exercise, reading, or spending more time with friends and family. You should try to find something you enjoy and focus your attention on that.

  • Set boundaries

If this obsessive behavior causes you to go beyond your limits, such as stalking or constantly monitoring their social media, you must set boundaries for yourself right away. Set a time limit for yourself on social media, and avoid stalking someone's life.

  • Journal writing

Writing a journal allows you to better understand your emotions. You can record when obsessive thoughts occur, what causes them, and how to stop them.

  • Talk to others

When obsessive thoughts interfere with your personal life, it is best to discuss them with others. Discussing your behavior with friends or family can help you realize that it is potentially dangerous.

You can also speak with a psychologist or psychiatrist. A psychologist or psychiatrist will assist you in identifying the issues you are facing and recommending appropriate therapy.

Admiration for others can lead to obsessive behaviors that harm both you and others. If you require assistance, you can contact a doctor or another professional.

If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
